What a needle scaler does - and why low-vibration matters
A needle scaler drives a bundle of reciprocating steel needles to chip away rust, mill scale, marine growth and old paint. Because the needles move independently the tool follows the contour of the surface - ideal for welds, pitted plate, around bolt heads and the awkward geometry all over a vessel. Swap the needle holder for a chisel holder and the same body becomes a chisel scaler for concentrated cutting.
Traditional needle scalers transmit heavy hand-arm vibration straight into the operator, cutting safe working time to minutes per shift. Trelawny's Vibro-Lo™ low-vibration range cuts that sharply while keeping the impact rate needed to clear scale and weld spatter. Compared like-for-like from Trelawny's own declared tables, a VL303 at 3.70 m/s² is about 11.5 times lower than the 3BPG it replaces, both at their worse grip, and runs 3,000 blows per minute against the 3BPG's 2,200 - so crews work longer, with far less fatigue and exposure. How They Work
Thousands of small blows a minute
A pneumatic piston drives a bundle of loose needles, or a single chisel, against the surface at 2,200 to 3,800 blows per minute. The needles follow the contour, so a weld seam, a pitted plate or a corner gets cleaned where a disc cannot reach. The tool also peens the surface as it cleans, which relieves stress in weld seams.
The Vibro-Lo models add a vibration-reduction system between the piston and the handle. The trade-off is a shorter piston stroke: less energy per blow, delivered more often, with far less of it reaching the operator.

Add up the tools, then add headroom
Multiply the per-tool consumption by the number of tools running, then add headroom for hose losses. The headroom is our recommendation rather than a Trelawny specification; the per-tool consumption figures are Trelawny's.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Trelawny needle scaler should I buy?
If a tool is used for more than about fifteen minutes of trigger time per operator per day, choose a Vibro-Lo VL model: the VL303 for heavy production scaling, the VL203 or VL223 for general work. For occasional use and tight access, the standard 1B or 2B is a sound and cheaper choice. For classified areas, only VL -Ex models are certified.
What is the difference between the VL203 and the VL223?
The tool is the same. The VL203 has a pistol grip and the VL223 is in-line. In-line suits precision work and tight spaces; a pistol grip is generally more comfortable for extended or heavy use. Both take 19 needles and draw 1.89 l/s (4.0 cfm).
What is the difference between a needle scaler and a chisel scaler?
A needle scaler spreads the blow across a bundle of independent needles that follow the surface contour, which suits corrosion, coatings and weld cleaning over irregular surfaces. A chisel scaler concentrates the same energy into one point for heavy scale, render and spot removal. Every tool in this range converts between the two.
Can these tools be used with a dust collector?
Yes, with the matching TVS vacuum shroud and a separate industrial dust collector. This is the normal arrangement where coatings may contain lead, chromate or other hazardous material.
How often do needles need replacing?
Needles are consumables, and life depends entirely on the surface. As they wear, adjust the front tube so about 25 mm of needle protrudes. Worn or missing needles are one of the listed causes of poor performance.
Are Trelawny tools ATEX certified?
Only the VL -Ex models, which carry ATEX Type II certification and their own documentation. The standard B and BPG range must not be used in potentially explosive environments.
