Trelawny Surface Strippers: TFS230 Floor Stripper & Long-Reach Scrapers

Trelawny TFS230-VM 82 V battery walk-behind floor stripper with removable handle and front wheels

TFS230-VM - 82 V battery floor stripper

Two ways to strip a surface without doing it on your knees. The walk-behind TFS230 lifts linoleum, vinyl and carpet tile at an average of 20 m² an hour, by Trelawny's figure. It comes in 110 V and 230 V mains versions and as the 82 V battery TFS230-VM. The long-reach scrapers come in 2ft to 6ft lengths, with lighter aluminium LITE models for overhead work. They chip and scrape tile, adhesive, screed, ice and loose deck rust from a standing position, on 2.1 l/s (4.5 cfm) of air.

Why Two Tools, Not One

They solve different problems. Most refits need both.

Trelawny TFS230 mains-powered walk-behind floor stripper with its electric motor, removable handle and front wheels

A machine for open floor

  • It covers ground. Trelawny give an average of 20 m² an hour on linoleum, vinyl and carpet tile, the job the machine is built for.
  • It needs a floor to roll on. The blade works under the front of a 230 mm wide, walk-behind chassis. It does not follow a bulkhead up or get into the last few centimetres of a corner.
  • It fits through a door. The chassis is 360 mm wide. The handle comes off for transport, and Trelawny say the battery version fits a standard car boot.
  • Mains or battery. The 110 V and 230 V machines share one 1.1 kW brushless motor. The TFS230-VM has a 1.5 kW brushless motor on an 82 V battery, for spaces without a convenient outlet.
Three Trelawny long-reach tools against a bulkhead: two with flat scraper blades and a shorter one fitted with the needle attachment

A hand tool for everywhere else

  • It goes where the machine cannot. Bulkheads, stairwells, tank interiors, overheads, tight passageways, and the strip along every edge the TFS230 leaves behind.
  • You stand up to use it. A pneumatic piston drives a chisel or blade at the end of a 740 mm to 1,710 mm tube, so floor work is done standing, not kneeling.
  • One body, several jobs. Trelawny list chisels and blades for tile, linoleum, stubborn adhesive, paint and coating spillage, and asphalt. A conversion kit turns the same tool into a long-reach needle scaler.
  • A small compressor runs it. Every length uses 2.1 l/s (4.5 cfm) at 6.2 bar. Trelawny size it to a small portable compressor, not a yard main.

How They Work

TFS230: an oscillating blade at a set angle

The motor drives a 230 mm blade back and forth under the front of the machine, and the operator walks it into the floor covering. Two adjustments do most of the work. The handle height sets a comfortable working position, and a T-handle above the rear left wheel sets the blade's angle of attack. Trelawny's manual says to use the smallest angle the material allows. A rear kick plate gives extra shove on stubborn adhesive.

  • Score sheet material first. For vinyl or carpet laid as a sheet, Trelawny's manual says to cut it into strips about the width of the blade with a knife before you start.
  • Turn the blade to suit the subfloor. Bevel up on concrete, bevel down on wood, per the manual.
  • Blade changes are quick. Three Allen screws clamp the blade between two holder plates. The 5 mm Allen key comes with the machine. Trelawny sell a flat blade and a U blade, singly or in packs of five.
  • The battery version starts differently. The TFS230-VM needs its red isolator key fitted and the emergency stop released before it will run. It shows the battery level on a digital display.

Long-reach scrapers: a piston at the end of a tube

Compressed air drives a 28.6 mm piston over a 39 mm stroke, 2,200 times a minute, onto a chisel or blade held in a 5/8" hex shank. The tool is the same at every length. What changes is the tube: steel on the standard models, aluminium on the LITE models, and 740 mm to 1,710 mm long. The chisel has a quick-change release. Trelawny's manual asks for a solid stance and a secure foothold. The tool should never run without its chisel on the work.

SepcoTech's calculation from Trelawny's declared values, using T = 8 × (2.5 ÷ a)² hours for the 2.5 m/s² A(8) action value and the same formula with 5.0 for the limit value, both under Directive 2002/44/EC. For the long-reach tools, a is the higher of H1 and H2. These are trigger times, not shift lengths, and they assume this is the operator's only vibrating tool that day.

What that means for the crew

  • The TFS230 is fast, but not an all-day tool for one person. At Trelawny's average of 20 m² an hour, 23 minutes of trigger time is about 7 to 8 m² before the action value, and about 30 m² before the limit value. Plan two operators for a large accommodation block. That is SepcoTech's arithmetic, not a Trelawny figure.
  • The battery machine halves the time. The TFS230-VM is 8 to 11 kg lighter and quieter than the mains machine, but Trelawny declare 16.3 m/s² against 11.5.
  • LITE is not always the worse choice. A LITE scraper is 34 to 35% lighter. It vibrates more at 4ft and 6ft, slightly less at 5ft.
  • The shortest tool is the gentlest. Where reach is not needed, the 2ft chisel is the one for sustained work.
  • The needle attachment is for occasional work. For a real needle-scaling job, a dedicated Vibro-Lo needle scaler gives hours.
Trelawny state in their manuals that they know of no PPE that protects against vibration injury by reducing the vibration reaching the hand. Anti-vibration gloves do not extend trigger time. Use the HSE exposure calculator for a mixed-tool day, and see our vibration tools buyer's guide.

The loud part is the attachment, not the length

As a chisel, every long-reach length runs at 80.5 to 85.8 dB(A) LpA. With the needle attachment fitted it runs at 103.0 to 104.7 dB(A), about 20 dB louder. The TFS230 runs at 82 dB(A) on mains and 76.8 dB(A) on battery.

Some listings show 116 dB(A) for the 6ft scraper. That is the needle attachment's sound power; as a chisel the 6ft runs at 84.3 dB(A). The FAQ explains the mix-up.

Emission is not exposure. The 80 and 85 dB(A) action values in Directive 2003/10/EC apply to an operator's daily exposure, not to a tool's rating. As a guide, the equal-energy rule (3 dB per halving of time) puts 8 hours at 85 dB(A) at about 7½ minutes at 103 dB(A). Assess hearing protection on the configuration you will actually run, and on the space: a tank or a small cabin reflects noise back at the operator.

What These Tools Don't Do

A long-reach scraper takes off what sits on top of the floor · photo: Trelawny
  • They don't prepare steel to a cleanliness standard. Both tools strip what sits on top of a surface: floor coverings, adhesive, screed, ice, spillage, loose rust. Taking a deck or bulkhead back to bare steel for recoating is needle scaler or deck scaler work.
  • They are not ATEX certified. The aluminium bronze chisels (705.1100, 705.1112) are spark resistant, but the long-reach scraper is not part of Trelawny's ATEX-certified range, and the TFS230 is an electric machine. For a space classified as a hazardous zone, see the ATEX range.
  • They are not an asbestos control. On older vessels, floor tiles, their adhesives and deck underlays can contain asbestos. SOLAS has banned new installation of asbestos-containing materials on all ships since 1 January 2011, not its presence on ships built earlier. Check the vessel's asbestos inventory or survey before stripping, and stop if you find suspect material.
  • The TFS230 is not listed for ceramic tile. Trelawny's application list names linoleum, vinyl, carpet tile, other floor coverings and backing adhesives. For ceramic tile, use a long-reach scraper with the cranked chisel (705.2102), or ask us about your subfloor.

Surface Strippers: Common Questions

How fast is the TFS230?

Trelawny give an average of 20 square metres an hour on linoleum, vinyl and carpet tile. The limit on a long job is usually the operator, not the machine. At 11.5 m/s², the mains TFS230 reaches the EU vibration action value after about 23 minutes of trigger time, which is 7 to 8 square metres at the average rate.

Is there a cordless version of the TFS230?

Yes. The TFS230-VM runs a 1.5 kW brushless motor on an 82 V battery, sold as the motor only (323.2510) or with one battery and a charger (323.2515). It weighs 34 kg without the battery, against 45 kg for the mains machine, and Trelawny give 90 minutes' runtime. Its declared vibration is higher, at 16.3 m/s² against 11.5, so an operator reaches the action value in about 11 minutes.

Can the TFS230 lift ceramic floor tile?

It is not on Trelawny's application list, which names linoleum, vinyl, carpet tile, other floor coverings and backing adhesives. For ceramic tile, Trelawny list the long-reach scraper with the cranked 203 mm chisel (705.2102). Tell us the tile and the subfloor if you want to try the TFS230.

How much air do the long-reach scrapers need?

2.1 l/s (4.5 cfm) at 6.2 bar (90 psi), the same at every length from 2ft to 6ft. Pressure at the tool must stay between 5.5 and 6.9 bar. Trelawny size it to a small portable compressor capable of 4.5 cfm. Add headroom for hose losses and for any other tool on the same line.

What is the difference between the standard and LITE long-reach scrapers?

The LITE models have an aluminium tube instead of steel, and weigh 34 to 35% less at the same length: 3.70 kg against 5.70 kg at 4ft. At 4ft and 6ft they vibrate more than the standard tools, 13.2 against 9.5 m/s² and 11.6 against 9.8 m/s² at the worse hand. At 5ft the LITE vibrates slightly less, 10.8 against 11.4 m/s². Choose LITE for overhead and high-level work.

Is the 6ft long-reach scraper louder than the shorter ones?

No. As a chisel scaler, Trelawny's operation manual gives the 6ft 84.3 dB(A) sound pressure, within the 80.5 to 85.8 dB(A) of the other lengths. The 116 dB(A) printed for the 6ft on the datasheet is the needle attachment's sound power. The needle attachment is the loud configuration, at 103.0 to 104.7 dB(A) on every length.

Can the long-reach scraper remove rust to bare metal?

It removes loose rust from ship decks, which Trelawny list as an application, but it does not prepare steel to a cleanliness standard. The needle scaler conversion kit (415.3532) turns it into a long-reach needle scaler, at 12 to 25 m/s², so for more than a short spell use a dedicated Vibro-Lo needle scaler or a deck scaler.
