How long can one person run a needle scaler in a day?
From under two minutes to most of a shift. The tool decides it, and the figure that decides it is the one most listings leave out.
Assessed at the worse of its two grips, a standard 28-needle Trelawny 3BPG reaches the EU action value of 2.5 m/s² in under 2 minutes of trigger time, and the 5 m/s² limit value in under 7. A Vibro-Lo VL303 doing the same work reaches the action value after 3 h 39 min. Same job, same operator, same surface. The difference is the tool.
Two limits, both a daily average
EU Directive 2002/44/EC, implemented in Denmark by Arbejdstilsynet's vibrationsbekendtgørelse, sets two values for hand-arm vibration, as A(8): a time-weighted average over an 8-hour day. The UK HSE uses the same two values, as 100 and 400 exposure points.

What counts is trigger time: the time the finger is on the lever, not the length of the task. A two-hour scaling job might be twenty minutes of it. Because A(8) rises with the square root of time, you can work any tool backwards:

Trigger time by tool, at the worse grip
Trelawny's own declared figures, measured to BS EN ISO 28927-9 and BS EN ISO 20643. No needle scaler lasts a full shift before the action value; the three Vibro-Lo tools last hours, the standard range minutes.

Read the two 28-needle heavy-duty tools against each other: the 3BPG and the VL303 do the same work on the same needle count. One gives an operator under 2 minutes before the employer has legal obligations. The other gives 3 h 39 min.
The figure everyone quotes, and the one that matters
Trelawny measures vibration at two hand positions and declares both in its operation manuals. H1 is the primary grip, by the throttle lever. H2 is the front hand on the barrel. Only H1 reaches the product pages, datasheets and reseller listings.
Both hands are on the tool, and on the standard range the front hand takes far more. The 3BPG's 42.57 m/s² at H2 carries a stated uncertainty of ±14.26 m/s², a warning rather than a precise value, but it is Trelawny's own number and more than twice the headline.
The useful consequence. At the grip marketing ignores, the low-vibration range looks better, not worse. On published H1 figures the VL303 is about 8.5 times lower than the 3BPG; on H2 about 11.5 times. Both ratios come from Trelawny's own tables, like for like.

Three things that qualify every figure above
None of them are product flaws.
- The test
Declared figures are laboratory figures
Trelawny states its tools are tested under specified conditions, and site conditions may not match. Emission depends on the task, the grip and the feed force. Compare tools with the table; do not treat it as a measurement of your crew.
- The air
A badly set air system raises vibration
Trelawny's troubleshooting table lists pressure too high, and too low at 70-80 psi, as causes. So do a dry tool, a weak return spring and a worn piston cushion. Run 6.2 bar (90 psi), at least 10 mm bore hose, no more than 30 m of it.
- The gloves
Gloves do not fix this
Trelawny knows of no PPE that attenuates vibration. Gloves keep hands warm and dry, which helps circulation, but they buy no trigger time. What works: a lower-emission tool, less trigger time, rotation, maintenance and health surveillance.
How much compressor do you need?
Continuous air consumption at 6.2 bar, per tool running. Size the supply above the sum, not to it: run the pressure down to 70-80 psi and you get a slower tool that vibrates harder.

Needle scaler vibration: common questions
How long can you use a needle scaler before reaching the vibration limit?
It depends on the tool's declared emission, assessed on the worse of its two grips. A Trelawny 3BPG at 42.57 m/s² at the front hand reaches the 2.5 m/s² action value in under 2 minutes of trigger time and the 5.0 m/s² limit value in under 7 minutes. A Vibro-Lo VL303 at 3.70 m/s² reaches the action value after 3 h 39 min. Use T = 8 × (2.5 ÷ a)² hours for any tool.
What is the legal hand-arm vibration limit in Denmark?
The Arbejdstilsynet vibration regulations set an action value of 2.5 m/s² A(8) and a limit value of 5.0 m/s² A(8), implementing EU Directive 2002/44/EC. The limit value must not be exceeded under any circumstances, and it applies to the self-employed as well as to employees.
Are low-vibration needle scalers less productive?
Not in the sense buyers fear. The Trelawny VL303 runs 3,000 blows per minute with 28 needles against the 3BPG's 2,200 with 28 needles, and weighs 3.51 kg against 3.7 kg. Its shorter 20 mm piston stroke means lower energy per blow, but the tool is not slower and not heavier.
Do anti-vibration gloves reduce hand-arm vibration exposure?
Trelawny states it is not aware of any PPE that protects against vibration injury by attenuating vibration emissions. Gloves are recommended for warmth and dryness, which matters for circulation, but they do not extend permitted trigger time.
Is a lighter long-reach scaler better for the operator?
Not for vibration. With the needle kit fitted, Trelawny's aluminium "LITE" long-reach tools declare 18.8 to 25.1 m/s² at the worse hand against 12.2 to 12.5 m/s² for the steel versions. Less mass absorbs less recoil. The lighter tool is easier to hold overhead, but it cuts trigger time to the action value from about 20 minutes to under 9, and to under 5 on the 4 ft.
Can a standard needle scaler be used in an explosive atmosphere with non-sparking needles?
No. Only Trelawny's VL -Ex models are ATEX certified. The standard B and BPG manual instructs that they must not be used in potentially explosive environments, and fitting beryllium copper needles does not change the certification of the tool.
