Which dust class does your material need?
Industrial vacuums are classified under EN 60335-2-69 by the hazard of the dust they are certified for. Since 27 June 2026 the Danish lead limit is 0.03 mg/m³, below the 0.1 threshold, and lead carries a non-threshold reprotoxic notation: leaded coating dust is H class on both grounds, and respirable crystalline silica sits in the same bracket.

An M-class machine is not adequate for lead paint, and cannot be made adequate. The class applies to the complete machine: filter, seals, housing and disposal system. A better filter does not make an H-class unit.
Trelawny lists the A22 and A45 as Class M with an optional H14 HEPA filter. EN 1822 filter class H14 and EN 60335-2-69 dust class H are different tests, so treat the A22 and A45 as machines for general surface-prep debris, and specify a certified Type H machine, such as the KAV30 Dry Type H (303.10KAV30/DH), for leaded, silica or CMR dust. Trelawny states each K Series machine ships with a filtration test certificate, above 99.995% at 0.6 microns: Trelawny's own filtration test, not the EN 60335-2-69 dust-class test. The full argument: dust control for lead paint.
Capture at the tool, not just in the compartment
Trelawny's Tool & Vacuum System (TVS) clamps a shroud over the needle bundle with a 38 mm take-off straight into the collector, so dust is caught in the same pass as the removal. A US EPA study on bridge steel found a vacuum-shrouded needle gun cut airborne respirable dust and lead particulate by up to 99%, and hazardous waste by up to 97.5%.
- The shrouds retrofit: 418.2003 fits the VL203 and VL223, 418.3003 the VL303, 418.2200 the 2B and 2BPG, 418.3040 the 3BPG. Scalers already aboard need shrouds, cuffs and a collector, not replacing.
- Cuff shape is a real decision. Flat, edge and corner cuffs are separate part numbers; a flat cuff on a curved frame is a leak path.
- Budget the air. KAV30 16 l/s (35 cfm) plus a VL203's 1.89 l/s (4 cfm) is about 39 cfm per station, roughly 90% of it the vacuum.
- Extraction is LEV, and LEV has an owner. Inspect, maintain and test it; filters block and airflow drops without any visible sign.
- Not for light metal. Needle scalers pit thin plate and aluminium, shrouded or not.
