Trelawny Hydraflex & Trident Neptune Hold cleaning equipment for bulk carriers and general cargo ships

Hydraflex - gun on its tripod

Cargo hold cleaning is two jobs, not one. Washing down residue is fast and covers area. Getting failed coating and scale off the steel is slow and covers very little. Trelawny builds a tool for each: the Hydraflex hold cleaning gun, which throws a solid jet 30 m using nothing but the ship's fire main and service air line, and the Trident Neptune, a flexible-drive descaler that reaches frames, brackets and vertical plating at an average 5 m² per hour.

Models & Consumables

Every item carries its genuine Trelawny part number, with the IMPA code where one is published, and adds straight to your quote. ShipServ TN 317548.

Worth knowing before you order. Trelawny's feature list mentions a shut-off ball valve, but the 2" ball valve, part 342.HY07, IMPA 59.07.49, is not in the 342.HY50 kit parts list. Pick it from the Hose Couplings & Adapters card below if you want isolation at the gun. We will flag it on any quote rather than let it turn up missing.

How the Hydraflex works

Compressed air is injected into a 51 mm water stream to make a tight, solid jet rather than a spray. Water does the cleaning; air gives it range. No pump, no power, no fuel: it runs on the fire line and the working air line already on the vessel, and throws the jet 30 m, enough to wash upper hopper plating and underdeck areas from the tank top without staging.

That makes the air valve a tuning control, not a switch. Trelawny's manual is explicit that too much air breaks the jet up. Open it gradually until the jet goes hard and tight, then leave it.

What the ship has to supply

Reach is set by water pressure at the gun, not by the gun. Check these before the kit arrives.

Water
454 l/minThrough a 51 mm bore hose, 5.9 bar measured at the gun. A fire main sized for two jets normally carries it.
Air
33 l/s70 cfm consumed; Trelawny recommends a 47.2 l/s (100 cfm) free-air compressor. 19-20 mm hose, 30 m run, about 0.21 bar lost per extra 15 m.
People
TwoOne cleans. A second opens the water valve at start-up and shutdown while the first holds the gun.
The hold
ClearedNo personnel, and no exposed electrical equipment rated below IP67, before the water goes on.

One inconsistency worth knowing about. Trelawny's manual gives the recommended water pressure as 5.9 bar (85 psi) and, three lines later, the correct operating pressure as 6.9 bar (100 psi), with the same 6.2 to 7.6 bar window for both air and water. Work to the window. If a specification makes the exact figure matter, ask us and we will put it to Trelawny.

Trident Neptune: flexible-drive descaling

Where the wash leaves scale or failed coating attached, the Trident Neptune takes it back to sound steel. A 3 m flexible shaft drives leaf and cutter heads or wire brushes into frames, brackets, hatch coamings and vertical surfaces a walk-behind machine cannot reach. The skid base keeps it from rolling on a deck, and the electric motors carry IP55 protection with automatic thermal cut-out.

Plan on 5 m² per hour, Trelawny's own average. It makes the Trident a tool for the areas that need it, not for a whole hold.

Hold Cleaning: Common Questions

What water pressure does the Hydraflex need?

Trelawny recommends 5.9 bar (85 psi) at the gun, with a working range of 6.2 to 7.6 bar. The 30 m jet reach assumes that pressure. Check the pressure available at the hold rather than at the fire pump, because that is where the difference shows up.

How much water and air does it use?

454 l/min of water and 33 l/s (70 cfm) of air. Trelawny recommends a compressor rated at 47.2 l/s (100 cfm) free air, which is more than the gun consumes, to keep pressure steady.

Is the Hydraflex really a one-man tool?

One operator does the cleaning. Trelawny's operation manual requires a second person at the water valve while the water is being turned on and when shutting down, because the gun kicks back with 10 to 18 kg of recoil. Crew it as a two-person task and the marketing claim causes no argument on board.

Do I have to use the tripod?

Yes. With 10 to 18 kg of recoil the tripod is what makes the gun controllable, and the manual's procedure assumes it. Set it up with the legs fully spread on stable footing before the water goes on.

What is IMPA 590742?

IMPA 590742 is the Trelawny Hydraflex hold cleaning gun supplied with its tripod, Trelawny part number 342.HY50, sold as a set. The related accessories run from 590746 to 590750.

Can I discharge hold washing water at sea?

Sometimes, and not in the Baltic or the North Sea under normal circumstances. Under MARPOL Annex V, cargo residues in hold wash water count as garbage: outside special areas, discharge is permitted only while en route, at least 12 nautical miles from the nearest land and only if the residues are not classed as harmful to the marine environment. Special areas, which include the Baltic and the North Sea, are far more restrictive, and residues classed HME always go to a reception facility. Check the cargo declaration before planning the wash.

Which tool do I need for scale rather than residue?

The Trident Neptune, or a needle scaler or deck scaler. Water washes residue out; it does not take failed coating and heavy scale off steel. Budget 5 m² per hour for flexible-drive descaling and treat it as spot work.
