● ALTUM Applications & Projects: Ships, Yards & Offshore

Wherever Access Is the Hard Part.

From a ship's hull in dry dock to a crane jib offshore to a chemical storage tank, the ALTUM reaches the steel from the ground: one operator, no scaffolding, no rope team, no drone permit. SepcoTech focuses the ALTUM on ship inspection, shipyards and offshore, backed by real tank, silo, bridge and pipe-rack projects that prove it works.

In the Marine World, Access Is the Real Cost.

On a vessel, in a yard or offshore, the inspection itself is rarely the expensive part. The cost is everything you build to reach the steel: staging and scaffolding against a hull, a rope-access team mobilised for a crane jib, a MEWP or cherry-picker on a quay, the permits and the downtime while a structure is taken out of service.

The ALTUM removes that layer. One technician stands on the dock floor, the walkway or the deck and brings the camera, or the ultrasonic probe, up to the steel on a carbon pole. SepcoTech supplies and supports the system, helps you spec the right modules for your structures, and arranges training and after-sales from one partner.

  • No scaffolding, rope access, MEWP or cherry-picker to mobilise
  • No structure shutdown just to build access for an inspection
  • Not bound by drone regulations: works where UAVs are prohibited
  • One operator, set up and inspecting in minutes from a safe standing point

Sectors the ALTUM Serves

Seven places where reaching the steel used to mean access equipment, and where the ALTUM now does the job from the ground. Outcome first, then the modules that get you there.

The jib is eighteen metres up. The inspector never leaves the deck.

On a platform, a terminal or a quay, the ALTUM brings the camera or the ultrasonic probe to the steel while the technician stays at a safe standing point. No staging to build, no rope team to mobilise, no airspace permit to wait for.

ALTUM Applications: Common Questions

New to pole-based inspection? Our guide explains how it works and how to choose modules.

Can it inspect a ship hull without scaffolding?
Yes. In dry dock or alongside, the ALTUM brings the visual camera or the ultrasonic thickness probe up the side of the hull, the topsides and the superstructure while the technician stays on the dock floor or walkway. There is no staging to build against the side. CSpect has used the UTM Ultra-Light module on a dredger's hull, measuring from the ground.
Does it work offshore and on cranes?
Yes. The carbon pole reaches crane booms, jibs and weld repairs, plus structures and pipe racks on platforms and terminals, from a safe standing point. At the Port of Ghent, post-repair welds high on a 64 m harbour crane were inspected with the ALTUM visual module: one person, no crane downtime to build access. The ALTUM is recognised by leading marine contractors including DEME.
Can it measure tank or silo wall thickness?
Yes. The UTM modules read remaining wall thickness on storage tanks and silos, including high vertical-wall sections and roof areas. Where rust or coating blocks contact, the crawler module grinds it off first and takes a clean reading in the same pass, as CSpect did on a fouled tank for Oleon N.V. CSpect has also measured chemical storage tanks to 20 m for BASF, reading through rust and past obstructing ledges.
Is it allowed where drones aren't?
Often, yes. The ALTUM is a ground-based telescopic pole, not an aircraft, so it is not bound by drone regulations or airspace permits. CSpect has carried out a bridge inspection near a railway where drones and aerial platforms were not permitted. Always confirm the site-specific access and permit requirements for your location.

Reach, Without the Access Rig

The ALTUM carbon pole puts the camera or gauge on the steel from a safe standing point, on structures where scaffolding, a rope team or a drone permit would otherwise be needed.
