Procurement

What category does EV-X fall under — and what approvals does it not require?

EV-X is classified as an operational tool, not an installed safety system. That distinction determines the procurement pathway, the approval requirements, and how it is managed through the asset lifecycle.

Your concern as Procurement

Is this a safety-critical installed system requiring class approval — or can it be procured as operational equipment?

Product classification

How EV-X is classified for procurement purposes

The most important procurement question for EV-X is classification. It determines the approval pathway, the budget category, and the documentation required. The short answer: EV-X is procured like PPE or supplementary firefighting equipment — not like an installed safety system.

Classification comparison
Installed safety system (e.g. fixed CO²)

Requires class society approval. Flag state notification required. SMS amendment required. Structural modification to vessel. SOLAS compliance framework applies. Capex with class surveyor involvement.

EV-X — operational tool

No class approval required. No flag state notification required. No structural modification. No SMS amendment required for procurement. Procured as operational equipment or supplementary firefighting kit. CE-marked components (EN 13731).

EV-X is not a fire suppression system. It is a containment and control tool deployed after initial suppression — in the same operational authority framework as other crew-deployed emergency equipment. This is the classification that determines the procurement pathway.

Approval requirements

What EV-X does and does not require

Class society

No class approval is required for procurement or deployment. EV-X is not an installed safety system and falls outside the class society approval framework. The pneumatic lifting cushions are CE-marked (EN 13731) — this is the relevant certification for the lifting components.

Flag state

No flag state notification is required for procurement. If EV-X is carried on board, crew must be able to demonstrate its use during flag state inspection. This is addressed through included e-learning — no separate flag state submission is required.

Internal approval pathway

EV-X is typically procured through operational or safety budget channels rather than capex. It does not trigger the approval chain associated with installed equipment modifications. The technical review provided by SepcoTech supports internal justification documentation.

SMS & fire manual

No formal SMS amendment is required for procurement. One procedural step is added to existing EV emergency procedures. Noting EV-X in the fire manual is recommended practice and does not constitute a formal amendment requiring class or flag state review.

  • CE-marked lifting cushions (EN 13731) — relevant certification for component compliance

Supplier verification

What is available for your procurement file

For procurement teams that require independent product verification before approving a new supplier, the following documentation is available from SepcoTech on request.

Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology

Independent test body: DBI is Denmark's leading fire testing institute for electric vehicles, internationally recognised. The test was not conducted by EVstinguish or SepcoTech — it is independent third-party verification.

Test scope: Full-scale, 113 kWh battery (Fisker Ocean 1), 9-vehicle formation at ferry deck spacing. Worst-case conditions: battery ruptured during fire, sharp metal edges on vehicle underside.

Result: Zero reignitions following battery submersion. Barrier confirmed reusable. Full test report, supporting data, and video available in formats suitable for auditor and underwriter review.
