JIMCO MAC500s UV-C air purifier in black

MAC500s - wall or shelf unit, black

Mount it high in the vegetable or dairy room and leave it running. The MAC500 draws the store's air past a contained 8 W UV-C lamp, breaking down ethylene - the gas that ripens produce - and cutting airborne microbes and odour. Mærsk crews report fruit and vegetables lasting about a week longer. One unit treats up to 60 m³, draws 25 W, and needs a new lamp roughly once a year. Two mountings: the wall- or shelf-mounted MAC500s for a ship in service, and the flush-ceiling MAC500c for new-build and refit.

A ship's provision cold room with a JIMCO MAC500 mounted on the wall

Fresh provisions, the whole voyage

In a sealed cold room, ripening produce releases ethylene, and the ethylene speeds up ripening across the whole store. The MAC500 interrupts that with photolytic oxidation: one UV-C wavelength inside the unit breaks down organic molecules and microbes in the air passing the lamp, and a second wavelength turns a little of the air's oxygen into ozone, which carries on oxidising ethylene, mould spores and odour in the room.

That ozone is deliberate and kept at a low level. The UL build is certified to California's 0.050 ppm ozone-emission limit, which is why the unit can run continuously in an occupied store or cabin. It does not flood the space the way JIMCO's OZ series does, and it produces no NOx.

  • Breaks down ethylene - measured by the Danish Technological Institute at up to 1.6 mL/h in a 20 m³ room
  • Airborne virus (MS2) down 99.9% after 3 hours; airborne bacteria and fungi down by roughly three-quarters within 45 minutes in a separate laboratory test
  • Removes odour from the room and its surfaces rather than masking it
  • Safe to run 24/7 with people present - low-level ozone, no NOx
  • No filters, no chemicals: the 8,000-hour lamp is the only consumable

Will it work in my cold room?

Three checks, in the order a superintendent will ask them.

1. Temperature

JIMCO rates the MAC500 for 4–45 °C. Most ships run the vegetable and dairy rooms at +3 to +6 °C, which is inside or on the edge of that range. Meat and fish rooms at −18 to −20 °C are outside it - do not fit a MAC500 in a freezer room. If your veg room is set at +2 or +3 °C, tell us and we will get the manufacturer's answer in writing before you order.

2. Volume

One unit per 60 m³ of room volume, mounted as high as the space allows (JIMCO specifies about 1.80 m and above). Coverage adds up: a 100 m³ store takes two. The 60 m³ figure is a room volume, not an airflow - JIMCO does not publish a fan flow rate.

3. Supply

The standard builds take 230 V or 115 V; the UL build is 120 V only. Ships commonly run 220 V or 440 V at 60 Hz, and JIMCO does not publish a frequency tolerance, so give us the actual supply in the quote and we will confirm the build or the transformer before ordering.

White and black carry article numbers on the marine list. JIMCO also offers grey and stainless for the UL build, and a grey UL is sold in the US - ask and we will get the article number. The lattices are black whatever the body colour, so a white UL unit is two-tone.

This build is 120 V only. If the vessel runs 230 V, order the standard MAC500s instead - the UV-C engine is the same.

Before you specify for a class survey: JIMCO publishes UL, CARB and EN certification for these units but no marine class type approval (DNV, ABS, LR, BV, ClassNK) and no IP rating. They are plug-in appliances, not fixed machinery-space equipment - but if your yard or class surveyor requires an approval or an ingress rating for the space, tell us at quote stage and we will get a written answer from the manufacturer before anything ships.

Order by article number

The lamp is the only routine consumable, but a unit that has been running in a cold room for years occasionally needs a fan or a ballast. These are JIMCO's own article numbers - quote them and there is nothing to describe.

Article no.Part
400.104 Lamp 8 W for MAC500s
The routine consumable - 8,000 operating hours, about 11 months on 24/7 duty. Fits every MAC500 build.
900.102 Fan for MAC500s
230 V AC - for 115 V builds, ask and we will confirm the part. The moving part - worth carrying one aboard if the units are running 24/7 far from a port with a JIMCO partner.
900.114 8,000 h timer for MAC500s / OZ
PCB. The board that counts lamp hours and flashes the warning at 500 hours remaining.
500.207 Ballast, electronic - MAC and OZ
230 V AC, 8–16 W. The current-generation ballast, common to both ranges.
500.206 Ballast for older MAC and OZ versions
Coil type. For units already on board that pre-date the electronic ballast.
900.113 Starter for old MAC500
For the coil-ballast units. Pairs with 500.206.
900.230 Lamp connector, Compact Cleaner
Fits MAC500 and OZ. The part that fails when a lamp has been changed a few too many times in a cold, damp space.
Carry the lamps, not the units. With an 8,000-hour lamp life a vessel changes lamps about every 11 months on 24/7 duty, and a lamp is the one thing that stops a unit working. Tell us how many units are aboard and we will quote a sensible ship's spares holding alongside them - it is far cheaper than finding a JIMCO partner in an unplanned port. The warranty does not cover the Photozone lamps™ unless there is a manufacturing defect, so treat them as a running cost rather than a warranty item.

MAC500 Series - FAQ

Will the MAC500 work inside a ship's cold room?
Yes, in the vegetable, dairy and lobby rooms - within limits. JIMCO rates it for 4–45 °C, and most ships run the vegetable room at +3 to +6 °C. It is not for meat or fish rooms at −18 to −20 °C. If your vegetable room is set below +4 °C, tell us and we will get a written answer from JIMCO before you order.
Does the MAC500 produce ozone?
Yes, a small amount, by design. One of its two UV-C wavelengths turns a little oxygen into ozone, which does part of the work on ethylene, mould and odour. The UL build is certified under CARB's 0.050 ppm ozone-emission limit, so it can run continuously with people present. That is different from JIMCO's OZ series, which floods a closed space with ozone and must only be run with the space empty. For how ozone treatment works and when crew can go back in, see ozone treatment on ships.
How much longer will fruit and vegetables last?
Mærsk crews report about one week more on fruit and vegetables, with a clear drop in spoiled goods, according to JIMCO's ship case story. JIMCO also cites storeroom studies of up to 60 m³ showing up to 14 days, though it does not name the study. Results depend on the produce mix, the room temperature and how well ethylene-producing fruit is kept apart from sensitive vegetables.

How to keep fruit and vegetables fresh longer on a ship - every option compared →
How much ethylene does it actually remove?
The Danish Technological Institute measured up to 1.6 mL per hour in a 20 m³ room at 3–6 ppm, which is 1.5–2 % of the room's ethylene per hour. DTI notes that real stores normally sit below 1 ppm and that a tonne of apples gives off about 10 mL per hour, so the unit slows ethylene build-up rather than scrubbing it away. Keep apples, pears and bananas apart from leafy greens and it works with you rather than against the load.
What is the difference between the MAC500s, the MAC500c and the MAC500s UL?
Only the housing and the electrical standard; all three use the same 8 W UV-C engine and treat up to 60 m³. The MAC500s mounts on a wall or shelf and is the retrofit choice for a ship in service. The MAC500c sits flush in a ceiling and is specified while the deckhead is open. The MAC500s UL is the 120 V UL-certified build with black steel lattices, the right choice wherever a unit is likely to be knocked.
Is it safe to run with the crew present?
Yes. The ozone it makes is kept at a low level - the UL build is certified under CARB's 0.050 ppm limit - and it produces no NOx. Do not open the housing while it is plugged in: direct UV-C light can cause painful eye inflammation.
What finishes can I have, and what are the article numbers?
MAC500s: white 100.312S, black 100.311S, grey 100.310S. MAC500c: white 100.312C. MAC500s UL: white 100.312 UL, black 100.311 UL, with black lattices on either. Stainless steel, and grey for the UL build, are offered by JIMCO but have no article number on the marine list, so we confirm availability and lead time before taking the order.
Which supply voltage do I order if my ship is not 230 V?
The standard MAC500s and MAC500c are built for 230 V or 115 V; the UL build is 120 V only. Ships commonly run 220 V or 440 V at 60 Hz, and JIMCO does not publish a frequency tolerance for these units. So tell us the actual supply in the quote request: we will confirm the correct build, or the transformer arrangement, in writing before anything is ordered. It is the first thing a superintendent asks and we would rather answer it up front than after delivery.
What if my cold room is bigger than 60 m³?
Fit more than one unit - one per 60 m³, each mounted high. Send us the room volumes and we will specify the count and the build for each space.
How fast does it cut airborne viruses and bacteria?
In Danish Technological Institute testing with MS2 bacteriophage, airborne virus fell 89 % after 1 hour, 99 % after 2 hours and 99.9 % after 3 hours. In a separate test by Analytical Laboratories in Singapore, airborne bacteria fell by about 74 % and fungi by about 82 % over 45 minutes after the room was seeded.
Is it certified, and is there a class approval?
The performance is independently documented: ethylene degradation and MS2 virus reduction by the Danish Technological Institute (signed report 2511, 15 December 2020), airborne bacteria and fungi by Analytical Laboratories (S) Pte Ltd, Singapore. The product carries UL certificate MH29099 on the UL build and CARB Executive Order G-21-570 (models 100310UL–100313UL) for ozone emission. JIMCO also holds the EU environmental award for developing a cleaner technology for the photolytic-oxidation process.

What it does not have, and we will not imply otherwise: a marine class type approval from DNV, ABS, LR, BV or ClassNK, a published IP rating, or shock and vibration data. These are portable plug-in appliances rather than fixed machinery-space equipment, so that is often not required - but if your yard or class surveyor asks for it, tell us at quote stage and we will get a written answer from the manufacturer.
What does it cost to run and maintain?
It draws 25 W continuously (23 W on the UL build), and the only consumable is the 8 W lamp, art. 400.104, rated 8,000 hours - about 11 months on 24/7 duty. There are no filters. JIMCO's warranty does not cover the Photozone lamps™ except for manufacturing defects, so budget them as a running cost and carry a spare set; the parts list covers the other wear items.
What is the payback?
JIMCO reports that on Arnold Mærsk and Mette Mærsk the saving in spoiled food exceeded the cost of the units within two long voyages. Your payback depends on voyage length, how much fresh produce you carry and how much you currently throw away.
Can I mix builds across one vessel?
Yes. A typical fit is MAC500s units in the provision and dry stores, which can be added at any time, and MAC500c units in accommodation and galley spaces built or refitted with the ceiling open. Send the space list and volumes and we will spec the mix.
