Fresh Provisions, the Whole Voyage.
On a long passage, the freshest fruit and vegetables typically last only about two weeks - then come waste, a thin galley menu and unscheduled resupply. JIMCO's MAC500s UV-C air purifier changes that. Mounted in the cold room, it strips out the ethylene gas that drives ripening and cuts airborne bacteria, mould and odour - keeping provisions fresh roughly a week longer, with no chemicals and no filters. Proven for years aboard Mærsk container ships. Supplied and supported by SepcoTech.

A sealed cold room ripens its own cargo
Far from port, the provision store is both lifeline and liability. Three things work against it.
Produce gases itself to death
Fruit and vegetables continuously release ethylene - the ripening hormone. In a closed cold room that gas accumulates and accelerates ripening across the whole store, so even the freshest stock typically lasts only about two weeks.
Binned food, thin menus
Spoiled produce is thrown away in quantity, the crew faces a shrinking choice of fresh food toward the end of a voyage, and provisioning has to be over-ordered or topped up at expensive ports of call.
Mould, bacteria & odour
Damp, cold, enclosed spaces breed mould, fungi and bacteria and hold stubborn odours - and on some ships engine exhaust and vapours are drawn in through the air intake, tainting the indoor environment on board.
UV-C light, doing the work of chemicals - without them
JIMCO has been building UV-C & ozone air treatment in Denmark since 1993 - for Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Radisson, KFC, Burger King and a great many McDonald's kitchens, and, for the last several years, for ships' cold rooms. One process, applied three ways across a vessel.
- Degrades ethylene - the gas that ripens and rots produce - so the whole store ages more slowly
- Reduces airborne virus, bacteria, mould & fungi - virus (MS2) down 99.9% after 3 hours; bacteria and fungi down roughly three-quarters within 45 minutes in a separate test
- Removes odour from the room, fabrics and surfaces - no perfumes, no masking
- No chemicals, no filters, no NOx - the only consumable is an 8,000-hour UV lamp
- Plug-and-play & maintenance-light - mount it high in the space and switch on
The science is photolytic oxidation, and it won JIMCO the EU environmental award for developing a cleaner technology. UV-C light at 200–300 nm photolyses organic molecules directly, while the same light generates ozone that oxidises (ozonolysis) what is left - a cold incineration that leaves no residue. The only thing that changes between products is how much ozone is let into the room.
Two modes, one supplier. Contained - the MAC500 series makes low-level ozone by design, kept below CARB's 0.050 ppm limit on the certified UL build, and runs continuously in cold rooms, stores and accommodation while the crew works. Flooded - the OZ series deliberately fills a closed space with ozone for a far deeper clean of empty stores, waste rooms and problem odours, and must be run with the space vacated and then ventilated.
Independently tested - not just claimed
JIMCO's preservation and disinfection performance is backed by accredited third-party laboratories.

| Tested | Result |
|---|---|
| Ethylene removal - Danish Technological Institute | Degrades ethylene at up to 1.6 mL/h in a 20 m³ room - for scale, a tonne of apples emits ≈10 mL/h, which is why produce lasts longer |
| Shelf-life extension - storeroom studies cited by JIMCO (≤60 m³, study not named) | Up to 14 days more shelf life on stored produce, per JIMCO |
| Airborne bacteria & fungi - Analytical Laboratories (S) Pte Ltd, Singapore | Total bacterial count 900 → 230 CFU/m³ (≈74%) and total fungal count 1,190 → 220 CFU/m³ (≈82%) over 45 min, after seeding |
| Virus inactivation - MS2 bacteriophage (Danish Technological Institute) | Airborne virus cut 89% at 1 h → 99% at 2 h → 99.9% at 3 h |
Laboratory figures from JIMCO test documentation - verified by the Danish Technological Institute and by Analytical Laboratories (S) Pte Ltd, Singapore. A UL-certified / CARB-listed MAC500s version is available, complying with California's air-cleaner ozone regulation.
Years in service in Mærsk cold rooms
Not a pilot - JIMCO MAC500 units have been preserving provisions aboard ocean-going container ships, confirmed by the officers running them.
“Significantly longer durability - and the smell is always comfortable.”
On the Caroline Mærsk, a MAC500s has run in the cooling room for three years, where milk, fruit, vegetables and other temperature-sensitive provisions are stored. The result: noticeably longer-lasting produce, less waste, and a consistently fresh-smelling store. The same units now keep provisions fresh across a growing list of vessels in the fleet.
“We experience a significantly longer durability of fruit and vegetables, thus reduced waste goods. The smell is always comfortable in the cooling room.”
Poul Engers PedersenCaptain - 3 years in service · statement collected by JIMCOJIMCO reports that ethylene was cut in each refrigerated room, giving about a week more shelf life, and that after two long voyages the savings exceeded the cost of the air purifiers.
Harald AastrupChief Engineer · as reported by JIMCOJIMCO reports that poor air quality from exhaust and vapours drawn into the air intake was resolved, giving a clean environment on board and significantly extended shelf life far at sea.
Uffe Damgaard HansenChief Engineer · as reported by JIMCOBeyond shipping, the same JIMCO UV-C & ozone technology is in daily use ashore - at the Vega Salmon A/S fish factory in Esbjerg, tests with the University of Southern Denmark showed listeria and salmonella almost completely removed with roughly one hour of treatment a day.
Small air purifiers for every space on board
Two families on the same photolytic oxidation: continuous low-ozone UV-C for a space the crew is working in, and periodic ozone deep-cleaning for one they can leave. Pick the build and options on any card - the article number updates as you go.

White, black and grey carry article numbers on JIMCO's Compact Cleaners list. Stainless steel is shown on the manufacturer's product page but has no article number on that list, so we confirm availability and lead time before accepting an order for it.
Ships commonly run 220 V or 440 V at 60 Hz. Tell us the supply on board in the quote and we will confirm the build or the transformer needed.

Ceiling & temperature notes
The ceiling housing is listed in white only (art. 100.312C). If it has to match a specific deckhead, say so in the quote and we will ask the factory before you order.
JIMCO does not publish a separate operating temperature for the ceiling housing; we assume the same 4–45 °C and confirm it for cold-room ceilings.

Finish, supply & certificate notes
White and black carry article numbers on the marine list. JIMCO also offers grey and stainless for the UL build, and a grey UL is sold in the US - ask and we will get the article number. The lattices are black whatever the body colour, so a white UL unit is two-tone.
This build is 120 V only. If the vessel runs 230 V, order the standard MAC500s instead - the UV-C engine is the same.

Handle, finish & 24 V notes
The handle is an article number, not an accessory line: 100.302 without, 100.304 with. Aboard, where a unit gets carried between a waste room, a laundry and an emptied store, take the handle.
Stainless is the sensible marine default. JIMCO lists a coated alternative but does not publish which colour or coating standard it is, so we confirm exactly what you are getting before the order goes in. Finish is not a separate article number.
The 24 V version is stated in JIMCO's own small-air-purifier brochure but not on the current product page, so we confirm availability with the factory on every 24 V order.

Timer, handle & 24 V notes
Two different timers. Every OZ has an 8,000-hour lamp counter - what the article list means by "with 8000H timer". Only the OZ1000T has the 0–60 minute treatment timer. The timer stops ozone production; it does not tell you the ozone has gone - ventilate before re-entry.
Handle: 100.305 without, 100.306 with. Finish is not a separate article number - we confirm stainless or coated with the order. 24 V is confirmed with the factory on every order.

Finish & 24 V notes
Finish is not a separate article number - we confirm stainless or coated with the order. JIMCO does not publish the colour or coating standard of the coated version. 24 V is confirmed with the factory on every order.
Takes two 16 W lamps (art. 400.105) - carry two spares per unit.
Several spaces? Enter each volume, add, and repeat - the quote list keeps every line. Spare lamps and parts by article number are listed below.
Warning: ozone safety. The OZ series works by flooding a space with ozone - people and animals must not be present during a treatment cycle, and the space must be ventilated before re-entry. Aboard, treat that as an enclosed-space operation: ozone is heavier than air and pools in low spaces. The MAC500 Series makes low-level ozone by design, kept below CARB's 0.050 ppm limit on the certified UL build - safe to run continuously with the crew present. It does not flood the room the way the OZ series does. Before you run an OZ unit, read what ozone does and doesn't kill, and when crew can go back in.
What JIMCO does not publish, and we will not imply. There is no marine class type approval (DNV, ABS, LR, BV, ClassNK), no IP rating and no shock or vibration data for these units, and JIMCO's published vessel references are manufacturer case stories (Mærsk container ships), not independent trials. These are portable plug-in appliances, so that is usually immaterial; but if your yard or class surveyor wants an approval or an ingress rating for the space, ask us and we will get a written answer from the manufacturer before anything ships.
