Imaging Sonar
Omniscan 450 SS
The Omniscan 450 SS is built for side scan. Its longer transducer geometry buys better along-track resolution and more range — up to 150 m per side. To image both sides at once you deploy two units, one to port and one to starboard.

Maximum range is the range at which Cerulean has comfortably identified targets. SonarView will let you set the range out to 200 m.
Far field is the range beyond which the beam-width figure holds. Closer in, the effective beam is wider and sidelobes are larger.
Beam width is the nominal theoretical two-way (transmit and receive) 3 dB beam width.

In the box, and what it does not include
A sonar is not a system. These are the parts you will need alongside it — each one with Cerulean’s own source.
What’s in the box
- Omniscan 450 SS transducer with 1 m shielded cable
- Omniscan 450 electronics module
- 1 m Ethernet cable with 4-pin JST GH connectors (fits the Blue Robotics Ethernet switch); the cable also carries a pair for power
- 4-pin JST GH to RJ45 (female) adapter
- WetLink Penetrator for the SS transducer
- 8 × M3×12 mm standoffs and 4 × M3×6 screws for the electronics module
What else you need
- A watertight housing you supplyThe SS transducer is separate from its electronics module, and the module has to live in your own enclosure. Source →
- SonarView, on a computerFree with the device. Source →
- Forward motion, and a position sourceA side-scan image is built by travelling in a line. On a boat that is GPS; on an ROV you need a DVL or USBL. Source →
We supply the brackets, hubs, cables and spares alongside the unit — see what fits Omniscan 450 SS → or add them to the same enquiry.
Will it fit my vehicle?
The BlueBoat edition is the same price as the standard unit. For a BlueBoat install the Omniscan 450 SS BlueBoat Integration Kit (BR-102295) is ordered separately.
Common questions
Answers Cerulean publish, each linked back to the page it came from.
Why is the SS transducer longer than the FS one?
The longer array narrows the beam to 0.5° against the FS’s 0.8°, and takes maximum range to 150 m against 120 m. The electronics are the same in both — the transducer is what differs. Source
Can one SS image both sides at once?
No. One unit images one side. Port and starboard coverage on the same pass means two units, one facing each way. Source
Does it arrive in its own housing?
No, and this is the practical difference from the FS. The SS ships as a transducer plus a separate electronics PCBA with standoffs and a WetLink penetrator — you supply the watertight housing. The FS arrives sealed. Source
Is there a BlueBoat version?
Yes — OS450SS-BB, at the same price as the standard unit. The BlueBoat integration kit (BR-102295) is a separate order. Source
What else do I need before a mosaic will stitch?
A position source. On the surface that is GPS; underwater it is a DVL, a USBL, or Omniscan’s own Doppler motion tracking using two units. Without one you get individual pings, not a map. Source
