Why It Matters Now

The cheapest weapon at sea can close a sea lane for years.

A handful of moored contact mines or seabed influence mines can shut a strait, a port approach or an amphibious objective — and hold it shut long after the shooting stops. The threat is both inherited and renewed: legacy ordnance from past conflicts still litters European shorelines, while a new generation of influence mines adds AI-boosted sensors that are harder to trigger and harder to fool.

The Black Sea and North Sea already face post-conflict clearance tasks measured in years. Chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz remain acutely vulnerable. Yet mine warfare has historically been under-funded against flashier programmes — leaving many forces short of the kit to answer the threat quickly.

How a Mission Runs

RTsys mirrors the MCM kill chain in one acoustic environment — pushing the unmanned system forward first and keeping the diver clear of the charge for as long as the task allows.

Assess

A man-portable AUV runs a rapid wide-area side-scan survey of the box or Q-route — no minehunter needed. Contacts are logged, geolocated and prioritised before a diver ever enters the water.

Classify

The diver goes only to the contacts that matter, navigating and identifying the object on a helmet-free 12″ sonar console — even in the zero-visibility water where cameras are useless.

Neutralise

An acoustic firing device places and fires the charge on command from the surface — replacing fragile electric firing lines and letting the team stand off at a safe distance.

Coordinate

Topside, the surface station tracks every diver and vehicle on one hydrophone-linked picture, passing contacts and text in real time out to 2 km — 5 km via relay beacons.

In silty, black-water harbours where cameras see nothing, the diver navigates and images the contact on a hand-held multibeam console — confirming mine, UXO or debris before committing a charge.

Place the charge, then fire it acoustically from the surface at the moment of choosing — no fragile firing line trailing back to the diver, and the whole team clear of the blast radius.

Coast-guard and port-security dive teams sweep piers, pilings and ship bottoms for limpets, IEDs or contraband, and run search-and-recovery for weapons, evidence or missing persons in low-viz water.

French Navy — SEMA MK-II

The Marine Nationale took delivery of the MK-II generation of the SEMA recoverable ASW training target, operating a fleet of the systems for crew training and torpedo-firing exercises.

Netherlands & Belgium — 7× SEMA

A binational order for seven SEMA targets — four for the Royal Netherlands Navy and three for the Belgian Navy — supporting the partners' shared ASW training requirement.

Slovenian Navy — MCM AUVs

Delivery of one COMET-MCM two-man-portable AUV plus two NemoSens micro-AUVs for mine detection, classification and localisation in the northern Adriatic.
